With Captain America: Civil War only a month away and new Marvel Studios news hitting every day, fan attention inevitably turns to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the hitmaking Disney subsidiary sitting out July this year for the last time in the foreseeable future, the next feature set to hit will be the highly-anticipated supernatural thriller Doctor Strange.
There have been a plethora of set pics and costume shots already teased for the movie, but there has yet to be a trailer or even a teaser to give fans an idea of what one of Marvel’s most singularly offbeat creations is going to look like onscreen. However, fans won’t need to wait much longer for that, as the first Doctor Strange teaser is coming to Jimmy Kimmel Live.
According to the official press release, the teaser will be revealed along with a guest appearance by star Benedict Cumberbatch on the April 12th episode of the late night talk series - one which will also play host to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg. The Doctor Strange trailer reveal will come amidst a full week of programming on Jimmy Kimmel Live set up to promote the release of Civil War - one which will feature Marvel-related guest-spots throughout. “Team Captain America” (Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd) will appear on April 11th, with “Team Iron Man” (Don Cheadle, Emily Van Camp, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany and some guy named Robert Downey Jr,) scheduled for the 13th, one day after Gregg and Cumberbatch. The week will conclude with Thor’s Chris Hemsworth on April 14th - though he will at least technically be onhand to promote the release of The Huntsman: Winter’s War rather than Thor: Ragnarok (as the latter won’t be released until November of 2017).
“Cumberbatch is set to star as Dr. Stephen Strange alongside Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. Strange is a brilliant but egotistical surgeon who travels the world to restore his skills after a car accident leaves him unable to operate. In his travels, he meets the Ancient One, who teaches Strange the ways of magic in order to protect the Earth from a host of mystical foes.”
Directed by horror specialist Scott Derrickson (Sinister,) Doctor Strange serves as Marvel Studios’ first full foray into the realm of the supernatural in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on characters originally created by Steve Ditko, Stephen Strange is a brilliant but arrogant surgeon whose life falls apart when his hands are injured in an accident. Seeking a miracle cure from the mysterious mystic The Ancient One, he instead learns to use the magical arts and becomes The Sorcerer Supreme, tasked with protecting the living realm from incursions by demons, ghosts and other supernatural forces.
The film marks a departure for both Marvel and Derrickson. While the studio has spread its genre net fairly far, all of its releases thus far have kept their fantastical elements grounded at least mainly in the realm of science fiction (i.e. officially Thor and his fellow Asgardians are interdimensional aliens whose visits to Earth in antiquity inspired stories of them as the Norse gods); without yet featuring spirits, devils or any of the obstacles that typically plague Doctor Strange. In addition, the director - a theology student turned filmmaker - has up to this point primarily specialized in low-budget horror films like Sinister, Deliver Us From Evil and The Exorcism of Emily Rose; all of which potentially makes this film the latest Marvel release to arrive under the question mark of when (if ever) the studios seemingly-invincible box-office record will find its weak spot.
Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2016, followed by Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man – July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 – May 4, 2018;Ant-Man and the Wasp– July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel – March 8, 2019; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 – May 3, 2019; Inhumans– July 12, 2019; and as-yet untitled Marvel movies on May 1, July 10 and November 6, 2020.
