Doctor Who really is a British national treasure and has been part of the formation of characters that are well known across the world. One of the longest running villains and an extremely developed persona is that of the Master.

The Master, or Missy in one incarnation, has been treated like the arch nemesis of the Doctor for some time. The Time Lord has a lot of secrets and is quite the mysterious character. Here’s 10 unanswered questions we have about The Master.

IS HE DEAD?

The biggest question of them all is whether he’s even alive. The finale  of the last series seemed to kill him off once again, perhaps even stopping his regeneration abilities from being used. But that has of course not stopped him in the past.

Since the latest iteration of the character has been so excellent, it’s likely the show runners will want to keep him around for a little longer. It’s probable therefore that he isn’t dead and somehow escaped just before everything blew up!

DOES HE WANT TO CONVERT?

With the race of Cyber Masters being one of his most genius creations, it does create the question of whether he himself should convert. The Master quite likes being alive, but could also see the benefit of upgrading himself into the future.

It’s probably a debate he’s had with himself as he could be the main leader of the Cyber Masters and even become one of them. It probably would mean that he’d be one of the most powerful villains in the universe which would appeal, plus it’s a cool look!

IS HE FED UP OF THIS BATTLE?

The Master and the Doctor have been at battle for so long that it’s hard to remember how it all even started. However, it seems like the Master never tires of this constant clash between the two of them. But is this really the truth of the matter?

In the final episode he partly seemed as if he didn’t care whether he lived or died. He almost dared the Doctor to kill all of them and put an end to all this fighting. Perhaps the Master is sick of what he has become but it’s too late to turn back.

CAN HE BE REDEEMED?

Missy has been redeemed in the past and that shouldn’t stop the Master from being redeemed as well. However, as soon as the Master returned again he was back to his old evil self, even using some dastardly tricks we hadn’t seen in a while.

It’s probably too late for this version of the character to be redeemed although the Doctor will always try to forgive someone no matter what they have done. In some ways the latest version of the character is more like a frightened child, lashing out.

HOW DID HE SURVIVE TO START?

The Master’s return raises a lot of questions to begin with. How did he actually survive? There’s been plenty of times where the character is back alive again without any kind of explanation, but it’s part of the fun and the mystery of the character.

What can be said though is that this will never be answered. If the Master has survived this huge blast it won’t be explained either, because the whole point is that the audience is tricked every time and the Doctor can maintain confusion.

WHERE IN THE TIMELINE IS THIS MASTER?

There’s a lot of theories suggesting that this isn’t the regeneration of the Master that we assume it is. It’s possible that this is actually the iteration of the character after the John Simm version of the Master but before Missy.

This could explain why he still has the same evil personality and why he is even alive at all. Of course, there’s a number of things about that which might not add up, but the version of the character could actually be a question that’s answered in the future.

HOW MUCH HAS HE LIED ABOUT?

The Master has been known to tell the Doctor anything but the truth. So when he’s come brandishing all sorts of knowledge it makes us question how much of it is actually false. The Master wouldn’t really care about lying.

In fact, he may have fabricated these lies in order to throw the Doctor off kilter just enough for her to try to kill everyone. However, there may also be a little bit of truth to what he said.

IS HE CONNECTED TO HIS TARDIS?

The Doctor and the TARDIS are as inseparable as she is to her companions. In some ways the TARDIS is the ultimate companion and knows the Doctor better than she knows herself.

This personality is unique to the blue box but perhaps the Master is connected to his own time machine in some way as well. We’d love to know whether the relationship with the Master and his house is the same as the Doctor and her police box.

HOW MANY VERSIONS HAVE THERE BEEN?

We have seen multiple versions of the character on screen but that doesn’t mean that this is ever regeneration that has ever existed. Indeed, we recently learned that the Doctor has also had more regenerations.

We’d love to know how many Masters there have been over the years and whether he is limited in his regenerations as well. Perhaps there is an infinite amount of the villain waiting to wreck havoc.

WHAT’S HIS CURRENT GOAL?

With the Master’s plan ruined once more he’s had to go back to the drawing board, if he is alive of course. That means that he needs a brand new plan for universal domination.

But is that actually what his goal is? Is he constantly looking to be the master of all things, or are all of his evil deeds created just to get attention from his former best friend, turned enemy?
