Recently, Doctor Who finished its latest season, and there was plenty of new TARDIS info to explore. Whether it was the TARDIS of a previous Doctor, a couple of new ones stolen from Gallifrey, or the Master’s own, they were all over the final few episodes.
While we already know so much about the police box time machine, there are still many more questions we have, especially since the events of the last season. Here are 10 unanswered questions that still plague us about the Time And Relative Dimension In Space.
IS THIS THE FIRST TARDIS THE DOCTOR HAS HAD?
Since the Doctor has lived longer than we could even know, and has had far more regeneration than we’ve been shown, it’s possible that this is not her first TARDIS. In fact, she could have had multiple versions of the machine before settling on this one.
We may never find out if the current version was the first or not, but since the character has such an attachment to this one, it would seem odd if she had actually used others in the past. Maybe this is all part of the ongoing Timeless Child story.
HOW MANY ROOMS ARE THERE?
The TARDIS is absolutely bigger on the inside and has an infinite amount of space to explore. We barely ever get to see alternate rooms in the TARDIS, which is a shame since the blue box is so interesting and complex.
However, we do know that there are multiple rooms, and we’ve even been told that there are kitchens and dressing rooms and all sorts of other areas. How many rooms exactly is a number we will never find out — probably because it keeps on changing.
IS IT ANY DIFFERENT TO THE OTHERS?
This TARDIS is supposedly special, but is it really different to all the other versions out there? It may just be that the emotional attachment the Doctor has formed with the blue box has made it special to her, but it could be no different in design.
Perhaps every other TARDIS has exactly the same qualities and features, or maybe this is an old school model with more personality and functionality. It could even be that each TARDIS has a distinct personality.
HOW SENTIENT IS THE TARDIS?
The TARDIS has been implied to be a sentient being, and has even been put into human form for a time. However, we don’t know how much of a soul the machine really has. Has it been programmed to have a personality, or does it genuinely have some kinds of unique characteristics?
The way it manages to read the Doctor’s thoughts and behave in its own way suggests it actually has a lot of sentience. However, there are plenty of times where it simply stops working through mechanical fault, so perhaps there’s not another life form in control.
HOW WAS THE TARDIS CREATED?
We’ve also seen the Doctor try to build his own TARDIS in the past, but how was it really created to begin with? Supposedly, the Time Lords did create the technology behind the time machines, but this must have been very complicated science.
The TARDIS is a Type 40 version of the machine, and there have been many attempts beforehand to try to create a finished product. The infinite space on the inside of the machine must have taken decades to work out.
HOW MANY HAVE BEEN MADE?
It’s difficult to figure out how many of these machines have actually been made. The TARDIS used to be treated like a one of a kind, but more recently there have been a larger number of them. It seems like Gallifrey has plenty to spare.
With characters like the Master now having their own TARDIS, there’s no telling how many others there have been and who else has them. Old companions like Captain Jack might have even come into possession of them at some point.
ARE ALL THE CONSOLES STILL IN EXISTENCE?
We know that one of the old versions of the main console are still in existence within the depths of the TARDIS. This begs the question of whether every version of the TARDIS is actually still inside the box somewhere.
It would be pretty cool to know that no version of the TARDIS ever dies, and that there are various areas around the ship that have different themes based on past doctors. Plus, it’s always useful to have a spare console once in a while.
WHICH VERSION OF THE TARDIS DOES THE DOCTOR LIKE MOST?
The Doctor has had many iterations of the same TARDIS. Every time there’s a new Doctor now, we get some kind of change in the interior. We’ve had the classic old school look, something more Gallifreyan, and now something very natural.
There have been so many versions that it’s hard to pick a favorite, but we wonder if the Doctor has an ideal version of the box. The chances are that the TARDIS is simply perfect for the particular Doctor, no matter what the console room is like.
IS THE CHAMELEON CIRCUIT REALLY BROKEN?
The chameleon circuit is the mechanics behind the TARDIS changing its appearance in order to fit in with its surroundings. The problem is that it’s broken, which is why it always looks like a blue police box.
However, after all this time, you’d think both the Doctor and the TARDIS would be able to fix the issue. What’s more likely is that they have both become attached to the look and decided to keep it.
WHY DOESN’T THE DOCTOR GET A CREW?
A previous episode has shown that the TARDIS is supposed to be operated by multiple people, which is why it has hexagonal sides. The question is, therefore, why doesn’t the Doctor just get a crew?
She has lots of companions, and has even created ragtag teams of historical figures; there’s no reason that she couldn’t create some sort of group of pilots to help her on her way.
