This past weekend, Doctor Who showcased its season finale, and revealed a lot about the Time Lords. However, with so many big reveals, this creates so many more questions that we just don’t know how to answer.
The previous episode may have had mixed reactions, but one thing is very clear: there’s so much more about this ancient race of aliens that we couldn’t even begin to understand. Here are 10 questions about the Time Lords that are still unanswered.
HOW MUCH HAVE THEY LIED ABOUT?
When it was revealed that they had lied about the origin of their species, it opened up a lot more questions. What else have the Time Lords lied about? Pretty much all of the Doctor’s backstory could really be a fabrication planted in her head.
Their civilization might not have been built by them. In fact, it appears they just steal things from other species. What’s more, the history between the Doctor and the Master could have been built on a lie, one where the naive Master was vilified.
ARE THEY GONE FOR GOOD?
It seems as if the Time Lords were wiped out of existence in the last episode, but that hasn’t stopped them in the past. There have been plenty of times they have returned, and in a number of different mediums too, such as the comics and radio shows.
At some point in the future, they will probably be written in once again with the use of a bit of time travel. In this show anything is possible, and it seems like the writers would want the Doctor to be able to have a conversation with some of the Time Lords that lied.
WHAT WAS THEIR SPECIES BEFORE THE TIMELESS CHILD?
The Time Lords are a reinvented species after the Timeless Child brings the gift of regeneration. There’s no telling what they really were before that. Did they have two hearts the whole time, or were they always so intelligent?
They were still humanoid and had some of the same characteristics, but the Time Lords are essentially a new race created from significant research on the Child. We’d love to know exactly what they were before all of this happened.
HAVE THEY ALWAYS BEEN VILLAINS?
The Time Lords have pretty much come out of this series looking like major villains. This might not be a new thing, though. Perhaps they have always acted in this way, and we are only just realizing it now.
Sure, they have been portrayed in a kind of gray area many times, but this is often linked back to the leader, Rassilon. However, with all this new information, perhaps they have been villains all along, hiding in plain sight but stealing from the galaxy.
WHY DID THEY LIE?
For what reason did the Time Lords lie about their past? Was it in order to cover up what they really were to stop any of their prestige being taken away? Or was there another, more significant reason than this?
Perhaps they were afraid of the real species with regeneration actually finding out what happened and looking for some kind of revenge. Of course, it makes sense that if a Child was stolen and used to create a new species, the original parents wouldn’t be happy about it.
HOW DID THEY DISCOVER TIME TRAVEL?
It seems as if the Time Lords discovered time travel by themselves and even created the TARDIS alone, but it’s unclear how they did this. Perhaps there was a little more stealing from other planets before they got to the answers they needed.
The reason for developing this is also unclear. It could have been that it gave them an extra piece of dominance over the galaxy, but on the other hand, compared to some of the other things they needed to achieve, it’s odd that time travel was at the top of the list.
DO ANY CHEAT REGENERATION?
The number of regenerations have been limited per Time Lord, but we have seen that, in theory, this can be cheated, and they can be gifted many more than this. Well, it appears that some of the Time Lords might have taken advantage.
Rassilon is one example of a Time Lord who would have absolutely taken advantage of this system, and constantly used his regeneration to stay in power for as long as possible. There may be others who have cheated a little.
WHO KNEW ABOUT THEIR HISTORY?
The knowledge of the Time Lords has been heavily guarded, and it’s very clear to see why. Who actually knew about their true heritage remains to be seen. It could be that other species had an idea of what had happened.
Perhaps the Daleks knew exactly how the Time Lords had been created, and that they were trying to wipe them out as they were not pure (something that Daleks are incredibly obsessed with).
ARE THE CYBER MASTERS THE FUTURE?
The Master has created a brand new race of Cybermen that are far more superior than anything that has come before. The Cyber Masters are Cybermen that can actually regenerate using Time Lord DNA.
Not only does this make them pretty unstoppable, but they also have really cool armor. However, due to a huge explosion, they have been completely destroyed — unless there are some that have survived, and are the future.
WHY WERE THEY SO ARROGANT?
The arrogance of the Time Lords is truly astounding, especially since their greatest gift isn’t really theirs. The name they chose only showcases how much pride they really have.
But where does this arrogance come from? It’s as if they have a chip on their shoulder from some kind of past we are unaware of. Now that they are all gone we may never know the answer to these questions.
