Doctor Who stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate are coming back together for an audio drama centered on the latter’s character, Donna Noble. Tennant, the Tenth Doctor from the reboot of the long-running British show, began working with Tate in the mid-2000s and recently, they’ve been collaborating with the company Big Finish on audio dramas that continue the fictional pair’s adventures during the gaps between their seasons of Doctor Who.
Tate, who is open to returning as Donna Noble on the TV show, has also recorded her own audio series, titled Donna Noble: Kidnapped, in which she investigates peculiar extraterrestrial events and abductions in the wake of her traumatic Library experience. The series pairs Donna alongside her best mate Niky Wardly’s Natalie Morrison and sees them and the iconic TARDIS time machine taken away by aliens on a journey to intergalactic planets, the middle ages, and a parallel version of Chiswick - all without the Doctor.
According to Digital Spy, however, Tennant will make a special guest cameo on one of the four audio dramas in the Kidnapped box set. Big Finish lists the episodes as the following: “Out of this World” by Jacqueline Rayner, “Spinvasion” by John Dorney, “The Sorcerer of Albion” by James Goss and “The Chiswick Cuckoos” by Matt Fitton. An audio preview can listened to here. Tennant will feature alongside Donna’s mother Sylvia, played by Jacqueline King. Other cast members include Sebastian Armesto, Timothy Bentinck, Isla Blair, Phil Cornwell, Anthony Howell, James Joyce, Nisha Nayar, David Schofield, Dan Starkey, and Lydia West.
During Tennant’s time as the Doctor, he had several different companions, but Tate’s Donna and he developed a special friendship. Their rapport was more comedic and less romantic than the Doctor’s relationships with previous companions, which at the time felt like fresh take. Sadly, Donna’s time on Doctor Who came to a tragic end when she was forced to forget all their wonderful adventures together. The new audio dramas sadly won’t address that since they’re set prior to the events that led to Donna’s exit, but the reunion between Tennant and Tate is likely to go down well with longtime fans of Doctor Who even it won’t be on a screen.
Currently, Doctor Who is on its Thirteenth Doctor, portrayed by Jodie Whittaker (Tennant’s Broadchurch co-star and not to mention podcast guest), but having David return for more Big Finish audio dramas doesn’t seem like something any fan would be against. Whittaker will be back again as the Doctor in season 13, and who knows? Perhaps she’ll have an adventure that has her crossing paths with former companion Donna or even a previous incarnation like the Tenth Doctor.
