Tomb Raider brings Lara Croft into the 2010s, but does that include adding in the now-typical post-credits scene onto the end of the movie? This version of Tomb Raider stars Alicia Vikander and, due to being based on the 2013 video game reboot, is a very different beast to the early-2000s outings featuring Angelina Jolie.

This is a younger Lara still at the very beginning of her violent archeological adventures, and that, of course, means there’s the potential for a big future to come. Indeed, Roar Uthaug doesn’t skimp on setting up the future, with the ending not just wrapping up our hero’s origin but teasing her lifelong mission to come. Naturally, many fans will be curious if there’ll be more of tease after the credits.

However, while Tomb Raider does have a scene after the ending title - the sequence from the trailer where a classically ponytailed Lara buys her signature dual guns - there is nothing either in the middle nor end of the credits: Tomb Raider doesn’t have a post-credits scene.

It’s something of a surprise. The “I’ll take two” gun scene feel like was intended to come after the movie but shifted to be earlier, either out of fear of audiences missing the fan-service moment or in response to it being a centerpiece of the trailer (a similar problem faced by Black Panther, whose U.N. mid-credits scene was in the marketing).

What’s more shocking, though, is that with the ending so keen to lay groundwork for Tomb Raider 2, it missed the chance to put it where fans expect. The most jarring part of the new release is how suddenly it pivots into a strange twist, something that would have fit much better as a tease outside of the movie proper.

Of course, whether we actually get a Tomb Raider 2 is still up in the air. The first film is expected to top the box office this weekend, finally dethroning Black Panther, but with a $94 million budget will need to be a worldwide hit to break even and convince Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel. One thing’s for sure, though - should it happen, Alicia Vikander is the right Lara for the franchise-carrying job.
