The first DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now available to download, as the Piranha Plant has been added to the game as part of the latest patch and is now a playable character.

The Piranha Plant was announced during the final Direct for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where it was revealed to be the first DLC character for the game. The reaction to Piranha Plant was mixed, to say the least, as it was such a bizarre choice for a Super Smash Bros. character and some fans resented it for taking the slot away from someone more deserving, while others loved it for just how bizarre a choice it was for the game. The negative reaction towards Piranha Plant cooled somewhat when Joker from Persona 5 was announced as the next DLC character.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just received a huge new patch that added Piranha Plant to the game, along with several other new features and gameplay tweaks. Players will know straight away if they have Piranha Plant available as the game will show it in a splash screen the next time it’s booted up. Piranha Plant is available for free to those who purchased Super Smash Bros. Ultimate since its release, and used the promotional code emailed by Nintendo to unlock it. Piranha Plant will only remain free to those who purchased Super Smash Bros. Ultimate before January 31, and will have to be purchased separately by those who buy the game after that date.

Piranha Plant is a character with some powerful (but slow) physical attacks and its ranged arsenal seems limited, with its spiked ball having a predictable arc, its poison cloud being powerful but having a short range and a long startup time, and its stretching move is strong and can go far but the fact that it has to turn within its pot to line up the shot will allow other players to block or dodge it more easily. The Piranha Plant has a lot of reach and maneuverability on its recovery move, but the limited range of its spinning leaves means it will have a hard time defending itself when in the air.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has also received some other new features in the form of four players being able to take on Spirit Board challenges at once, several new spirits being added to the game, the calculation of the Global Smash Power score being altered, and an abundance of bug fixes and gameplay adjustments, most notably in the form of burial moves (like Inkling’s Splat Roller) being changed.

It’s surprising that Nintendo hasn’t promoted the fact that the first Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character was made available today, especially as it has technically arrived early, as they had previously mentioned that Piranha Plant wasn’t going to be available until February. It’s too early to say whether Piranha Plant will be a powerful addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cast, but we can guarantee that a lot of players will try and bring the old Super Mario villain to prominence, as there’s no greater joy than winning a fighting game tournament with a potted plant.
