The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar and Inception filmmaker Christopher Nolan will try his hand at a different genre - the historical drama - in next year’s Dunkirk. The film was also written by Nolan and recounts the true story of the evacuation of Allied soldiers (hailing from Belgium, Britain and France) from the harbor of Dunkirk during World War II, when they were surrounded by the German army. Those who are eager to learn more about the film will soon get their chance, as the opening minutes of Dunkirk will be screened with select prints of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in IMAX theaters this month.
Warner Bros. Pictures is also going to be releasing a more typical trailer for Dunkirk with Rogue One in regular theaters - the second such theatrical preview too, following the release of the Dunkirk teaser trailer from earlier this year. The studio has gone ahead and unveiled an official teaser poster for Dunkirk online ahead of then, along with a map that shows where the film takes place (for those film buffs who aren’t so familiar with the piece of WWII history covered in Nolan’s movie).
Trailer Track is reporting that Dunkirk’s second trailer arrives in U.S. theaters this week (with select prints of Rogue One) and should be available online before then, mostly likely on Thursday: the traditional launch date for trailers before they debut on the big screen. In the meantime, you can take a look at the Dunkirk teaser poster and map released through WB’s official website for the film, below.
Nolan has become increasingly focused on pushing the boundaries of (and, in turn, promoting the benefits of) grand-scale visuals and spectacle with his last few movies. He even filmed significant chunks of both The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, in particular, with IMAX cameras. The filmmaker is continuing that practice with Dunkirk, as the WWII drama was shot using IMAX cameras on film stock and will be screened in the 35 mm/70 mm formats - in those select theaters that are capable of projecting movies in that format, anyway. As such, that visual breadth and added depth of field on display in the Dunkirk poster is an accurate reflection of the movie itself; the same goes for the richly-dark color palette, being something that most every Nolan film past has had too.
Dunkirk not only has a distinct “Nolan-look” and feel in terms of its visuals either. The film’s cast includes a number of familiar faces from Nolan’s past movies - among them being Inception costars Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy (both of whom also appeared in The Dark Knight trilogy). Dunkirk also features such new players to the world of Nolan cinema as actor/filmmaker Kenneth Branagh (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), as well as James D’Arcy (Agent Carter), Mark Rylance (The BFG) and Harry Styles of One Direction fame. You can expect to see at least a few of these actors pop up in the second trailer for the film, when it arrives this week.
