EA Play kicked off its E3 2019 presence with a fifteen-minute gameplay trailer for the much-anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, details about the combat, as well as whether or not players would be able to pick between Sith or Jedi paths.

Director Stig Asmussen and Vince Zampella were joined by Greg Miller of Kinda Funny. The trio explained that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order would be a single-player action adventure game set after the events of Order 66 in the Star Wars canon where the Jedi were hunted down and eliminated. The gameplay that was showed off took place around 3 hours into Fallen Order, and it was a level on the Wookie planet, Kashyyyk.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order: Combat

EA Play’s gameplay trailer for Star Wars Jedi, Cal and his helpful droid, BD-1, make quick work of navigating through Kashyyyk’s system of buildings with the use of what appears to be 3D hologram maps, classic Jedi abilities and of course, his handy lightsaber.

Asmussen noted that enemy arrangements were a very key aspect of how combat would work. There would be classic Force abilities like pushing, pulling, and a “unique expression” of the Force for Cal which involves slowing time. There was also a lot of emphasis on player inputs and managing your risk during the downtime between battles. It’s possible for players to heal between bouts of fighting with BD-1’s ability to throw out health packs, but that also leaves Cal vulnerable because of how time-consuming the action ends up being. With a renewed focus on the use and the weight of lightsabers as a unique contrast to the skills of the enemies that Cal encounters, it looks like there will definitely be some interesting Force-based interplay.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order: The Jedi Story

Zampella and Asmussen were very adamant during the conference that there would be no choice between the path of the light or the path of darkness in Star Wars Jedi. Unlike previous Star Wars titles where making the choice to either side with the Sith or the Jedi were major mechanical components and potentially even a draw for players wanting a true roleplaying experience, Zampella was clear that Fallen Order would be a “Jedi story” through and through.

He noted that the characters that are in Star Wars Jedi are established in the series canon and have predefined roles to play, which meant that any choices in the game would be choices relating to the player traversing the path of the Jedi solely. While the Sith are no stranger to being portrayed as enemies, removing their faction as a role-playing element, which has been a commonality throughout past games will undoubtedly see a very different sort of narrative available to players. Picking up the story from what many consider to be the Jedi’s lowest point in the Star Wars canon leaves a lot of scope for the team behind this latest game to play with redemption arcs, revenge, and more.
