Just in time for the holiday season, Elf receives its very own Honest Trailer. Elf was released in 2003, and revolved around Buddy; a human that was raised as an elf at the North Pole in Santa’s workshop. The film was directed by future Iron Man director Jon Favreau and starred Will Ferrell in the hysterical lead role. Alongside Ferrell, actors James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Daniel Tay, and Zooey Deschanel filled in as the supporting cast members.
There are many movies that are considered Christmas classics such as Home Alone, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, and even the Rankin/Bass Christmas Specials. Each year, many people sit down to watch these Christmas movies with their families and a warm cup of hot chocolate, and in 2003, Elf became a holiday tradition for many people. The film received mostly positive reviews upon its release and is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Now, the film has gotten the Honest Trailer treatment thanks to Screen Junkies.
Posting on their YouTube account, Screen Junkies released their Honest Trailer for Elf. Unlike most Honest Trailers, the guys at Screen Junkies joke that Elf is just too delightful to rip apart. However, the trailer does point out that Deschanel marries someone who has the mind of a child, that people don’t really seem to care that Santa is real, and jokes that Buddy will likely get diabetes in a few years. Screen Junkies also hilariously explains how the plot of Elf could easily turn into a Joker movie. The full Honest Trailer can be seen below.
Even though Elf was loved by many fans, the film never got a sequel. Several of Ferrell’s movies have gotten sequels over the years, but Elf 2 just never came to be. That being said, fans did get to see more of Buddy’s adventures, as the character got a stop-motion animation Christmas special in 2014 called Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas. The film wasn’t well received, partly because the original cast didn’t return, with Jim Parsons taking over the voice of Buddy.
Like the Honest Trailer points out, several of the actors in the film have moved on to bigger and better projects in the last 15 years. Ferrell would move on to his iconic character Ron Burgundy just a year later, while Peter Dinklage would be cast in Game of Thrones in 2011. Favreau would also start off the Marvel Cinematic Universe by directing Iron Man in 2008. Even though the cast and crew moved on to more lucrative projects, Elf will likely remain a holiday favorite for years to come.
