Something mysterious is terrorizing Emily Blunt and John Krasinski in the new teaser for A Quiet Place. Krasinski co-wrote and directed the supernatural horror film, coming on April 6th, 2018 from Paramount Pictures.
A Quiet Place marks the first time married couple Blunt and Krasinski appear together in a live-action film (they both did voice work on the animated Animal Crackers). Krasinski re-wrote the script, originally written by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, and took on the task of directing himself and his own wife in what looks like a harrowing survival horror exercise. Michael Bay produced through his Platinum Dunes banner.
Plot details for A Quiet Place are being kept hush-hush, but the new teaser from Paramount Pictures offers some hints. The trailer shows a young girl sprawled out on a sandy beach, apparently enjoying a nice, sunny tropical day. It then cuts to a cornfield, revealing that the girl was only daydreaming of being on the beach. The trailer methodically sets up the movie’s basic situation: the girl and her family are living on a farm in the woods, and there’s some kind of horrible, looming threat they’re trying to protect themselves from.
Sand comes up again when the teaser shows Krasinski, sporting a big beard, spreading some on the ground. It seems the sand is there to dampen the sound of the family’s footsteps as they travel around on a trail through the forest. This is just one of many precautions the family has to take in order to avoid making noise, including not speaking. “Listen closely,” the titles warn viewers, setting up the movie’s rules. “Move carefully. And never make a sound.”
What happens if the family breaks the rules? The trailer makes it plain that, if anyone makes the slightest noise, something horrible will happen. In the scariest shot, what look like huge claw-marks have been gouged out of the wall leading up a flight of stairs, confirming that something very dangerous is lurking there. Then the kids are playing a game of Monopoly, not using the normal game pieces because they’d be too loud, and one of them knocks over a gas lantern. In a panic, Krasinski rushes over to put out the fire, but by now it’s too late. Whatever the monster was that tore up the wall has been alerted and is coming to hunt down the family.
What kind of monster is this, anyway? An alien? A scary kid-eating clown? A Demogorgon from the Upside Down? The movie’s premise, which basically means that most of the action has to play out in tension-inducing silence, sounds promising. Moviegoers will find out next year if A Quiet Place puts an interesting and scary spin on survival horror, or turns out to be just another standard genre exercise.
