A new behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Avengers: Endgame offers a surprise: a different suit for Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. The photo, courtesy of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, comes the same weekend as the re-release of Avengers: Endgame. With the movie having not yet passed Avatar at the box office, the return to theaters is its last chance to dethrone the James Cameron film. As of a few days ago, Avengers: Endgame sat at $2.749 billion at the global box office, so it needs to bring in another $38.4 million to top Avatar. Even if the movie can’t cross that threshold, those involved with the film can be proud that they did best Titanic’s box office haul.

Marvel is hoping to convince fans to return to theaters to see Avengers: Endgame again by promising new content that wasn’t a part of the original film. In the same post as the Captain Marvel photo, the Russos shared that the re-release would feature “an exclusive sneak peek at the first 2 minutes of Spider-Man Far From Home.” That film drops this coming Tuesday. They also teased a Hulk-centered deleted scene, as well as a cryptic reference to “a few surprises.” Since the film’s re-release has already begun, it turns out the surprises referred to an introduction from Anthony Russo and a tribute to Marvel legend Stan Lee.

The Russo brothers shared the Avengers: Endgame behind-the-scenes photo on Twitter and show Brie Larson wearing the suit from her standalone film, rather than the one see in Endgame. This suggests that the outfit she ends up sporting in the final Avengers film must have been added in post-production via CGI. This makes sense, as the Marvel films rely heavily on CGI and special effects. It’s also not unheard of for this sort of change to have been made after filming. Check out the Endgame behind-the-scenes photo featuring Captain Marvel’s original suit below:

Captain Marvel’s suit has been a topic of much discussion. She starts her film in a green and black Kree suit, something that confused fans at first, since they’re not at all close to the colors Carol wears in the comics. However, after rejecting the Kree and embracing her powers, she changes her suit into the more traditional red, blue, and gold version seen in the photo. In the final version of Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel’s suit is shinier and has more gold plating. Her makeup in Avengers: Endgame has been a hot topic as well. Before the five-year time jump, Carol has more makeup on than she did in Captain Marvel, prompting some fan outrage. However, Joe Russo confirmed that the makeup was Brie Larson’s choice and chalked it up to figuring out the character.

The costume and makeup changes between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame make sense, especially because Brie Larson’s scenes in Avengers: Endgame were actually filmed before her solo movie. It’s likely that she got a better idea of the character while working on the standalone film. Plus, Captain Marvel’s look changes often in the comics, so this evolution is true to the character. Regardless of what her suit looked like, fans were happy to see Captain Marvel kicking butt alongside the rest of the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame.
