The co-writer of Avengers: Endgame has revealed that the oft-proposed method through which Ant-Man could defeat Thanos (through his butt) wouldn’t have worked. And it’s not because of the smell. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes experienced their first true loss in Avengers: Infinity War, when Thanos succeeded in his quest to acquire all of the Infinity Stones, using them to wipe out half of all life in the universe. In the months that followed, theories raged as to how the remaining heroes could avenge the fallen and undo Thanos’ actions.

By far, the most popular and hilariously simplistic theory was that Ant-Man would use his abilities to shrink down and enter Thanos via his anal cavity, at which point he would expand to his Giant Man form and destroy Thanos from within. The theory ultimately caught a lot of traction, spawning countless memes. The Russo Brothers, who directed both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, commended fans’ dedication to the theory. Even renowned scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson weighed in on the issue.

Ultimately, it was not to be, with Bruce Banner - in Professor Hulk form - snapping back to life everybody they had lost. And it was Tony Stark who would officially bring down Thanos and his forces, at the tragic expense of his own life. Everything played out exactly as Doctor Strange had foreseen. As such, Ant-Man never even got to contemplate or attempt the rear-end gambit. Speaking with Empire, Christopher Markus revealed that the plan would never have worked, saying, “Thanos could take a punch from the Hulk, we’ve seen that. And it stands to reason his whole body is at least as strong as that. If Ant-Man expanded, he would be simply crushed against the immovable walls of Thanos’ mighty rectum.”

Avengers: Endgame served as the culmination of 11 years and 22 films of Marvel storytelling. As such, the film was a smash hit from the moment it opened. Garnering positive reviews, it is within striking distance of beating Avatar’s record at the global box office, and the MCU shows no signs of stopping. The upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home will serve as the final film for Phase 3. Beyond that, there are apparently five years of stories already planned, including their first Asian-led outing, Shang Chi.

In regard to Ant-Man, future installments have yet to be announced. Markus’ statements, though, definitely hold some weight. After all, Thanos proved himself a resilient foe in multiple movies. In Avengers: Infinity War alone, he was able to easily subdue the Hulk even before possessing any of the stones. Later in the same film, it took everything Tony Stark had in his arsenal to spill even a drop of Thanos’ blood. And in Avengers: Endgame, it’s only with the assistance of Thor and Captain Marvel that The Avengers bring down an already weakened Thanos. With or without the stones, human bodies are clearly frail when compared to Thanos.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 even went some way to solidifying Markus’ argument. At the start of the movie, when Peter Quill and his band of misfits are hired to kill an inter-dimensional monster, Drax leaps into its mouth and stabs at it from the inside, deeming the creature’s hide too tough to pierce from the outside. As much as he believed otherwise, his plan proved fruitless. It therefore stands to reason that Ant-Man would have been equally unsuccessful. While he may be able to and grow to incredible sizes, his bones are no less breakable, and Thanos’ body would be no less durable. As such, while fans may lament missing out on a spectacular takedown, they were at least spared having to mourn an additional hero at the end of Avengers: Endgame.
