Avengers: Endgame writers confirm The Electric State movie is still happening. It’s no easy task following up a hit as big as this summer’s Avengers: Endgame, but it appears that the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely is more than willing to try.
The duo has found substantial success over the years with a number of their joint projects, taking on a variety of Marvel titles such as Thor: The Dark World, as well as the Captain America series. But it was their work on Avengers: Endgame in which they hit a high watermark of sorts, prompting many to wonder if they could, in fact, top such a global box office phenomenon. There had previously been talk of Markus and McFeely adapting a new film not related to the MCU, but the hype surrounding Avengers: Endgame and its eventual release made almost everyone forget that such a project was even in the cards. Now that the hysteria of Avengers: Endgame has died down somewhat, exactly what Markus and McFeely are up to next is worth paying attention to.
With SDCC currently underway, AMC Theatres has tweeted out an image from a panel confirming The Electric State will be the next project from the blockbuster duo. The film is based on an art book by Swedish author/illustrator Simon Stålenhag, which utilized a successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2017 to get it off the ground. Previous reports have stated that Markus and McFeely would be working to adapt the project, with IT director Andy Muschietti on board to direct.
However, after two years with no updates, as well as the rousing success of Avengers: Endgame, it was getting hard to tell if The Electric State was still a go. As it turns out, everything is still moving along smoothly and fans of Stålenhag, Markus and McFeely, and the dystopian sci-fi genre have plenty of reason to be excited by what’s on its way. The story of The Electric State takes place in a reimagined 1997, where human beings are isolated inside their individual VR helmets, battling a strange breed of monstrous battle drones after a technological meltdown. Within this setting, a runaway teenager and her yellow toy robot travel the West Coast of the United States.
Though the past two years have not given us much insight into The Electric State’s progress, now that Avengers: Endgame is out of the way, chances are we’re going to be seeing much more of this title in the coming weeks and months. That’s great news, too, as a film this massive in scope will need plenty of time to gradually reveal itself to the public. One thing’s for certain about The Electric State, however - if it ends up being even half as spectacular looking as the book, then we’re all in for a truly massive treat.
