Kanan asks Ezra to lead the team in their upcoming mission to save Hera in a newly released promo spot for Star Wars Rebels season 4B.

Returning to the small screen with the remainder of the series, Rebels will first have to deal with Hera currently in Empire’s captivity. We know that whatever goes down in the last few episodes of the show, Hera will survive given that she was mentioned in Rogue One and even went to help the Rebellion during Return of the Jedi’s Battle of Endor. But saving her from her current predicament could spell doom for some of her team members, nevertheless, Kanan is determined to bring her back home as seen in a new promo clip for the upcoming midseason primer.

The clip features a simple but impactful conversation between Kanan and Ezra as they draw a plan to rescue Hera from Grand Admiral Thrawn. After meditating with a mysterious Loth-wolf lurking in the background, the older Jedi Knight unexpectedly asked his junior to take the lead in their upcoming mission because he “can’t think clearly because of the way I feel about her. I might make a mistake.” Filoni provides a bit of insight into Kanan’s thought process at the moment telling ABC:

On top of the Ghost’s arguably most important outing, there are still a few loose ends that Rebels needs to tie up before they wrap its brilliant run, including Ahsoka Tano’s whereabouts. We haven’t seen the former Jedi since her emotional face-to-face with Darth Vader in Malachor and fans have been coming up with their own theories what may have happened to her. Whether we’ll find out her ultimate fate or not in the show’s last seven episodes remains to be seen as Filoni is not saying one bit about how the Star Wars prequel show will end.

“This is a big decision moment. Kanan is smart enough to know that his emotions around her could actually cloud his judgment and what he would choose to do. What a nod from Kanan to say, ‘I trust you with this’. This is really important to him, this idea that Hera is in peril. You would think that there’s no way that Kanan wouldn’t take up the responsibility of leading this mission.

“It is a nice transference moment. There’s always this thing where you have a student, and they’re becoming more and more adept than the master.”

If anything, Rebels has proved that Star Wars can branch out from the famed Skywalker saga and introduce new heroes that the fandom will love. In its four year course, Filoni and his team have successfully told stories that fit the franchise’s narrative from a different perspective which makes for a refreshing take on its premise. Infuse that with familiar concepts and game players, the series quickly captured the attention of the fans and now that it is actually ending, it’s a wonder how the team members’ individual journeys will pan out considering that aside from Hera, we really don’t hear anything about them past the show.

“There’s only a small group of people that actually know the entire ending of the series. I have all their names written down in my office. I know exactly who knows what. It’s my best attempt to keep all of this from getting out.”
