Fans of this year’s superhero blockbuster Wonder Woman have started an online petition to include director Patty Jenkins in the nominations for Best Director at the Golden Globes. When the nominations for the 2018 Golden Globes were announced a couple days ago, people were shocked to see Wonder Woman snubbed from awards considering the profound impact the beloved film had on audiences and critics.

So when the Golden Globes nominations were announced and Wonder Woman was nowhere to be seen, fans were not pleased. Nominations for the Best Director category included Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World and Steven Spielberg’s The Post. All worthy nominations, but people were understandably upset to see no female directors nominated, like Jenkins. To make their displeasure known, fans have started an online petition on Care 2 Petitions pleading the Hollywood Foreign Press revisit the Golden Globe nominations and include Jenkins in the Best Director category. Here is a section of the official statement on the petition:

As of this writing, the petition has reached 6,015 supporters almost reaching their goal of 7,000. We agree though that the Hollywood Foreign Press should consider Patty Jenkins for the Best Director category, especially considering the #MeToo movement sparked after the wave of sexual assault and harassment allegations connected to Harvey Weinstein and other powerful men in the industry.

The Golden Globes nominations came out today, and we are not pleased that no female directors are included in the nominations. … In an industry with glaring gender disparities, the Golden Globes ought to honor women who have gone above and beyond to cultivate success. The roadblocks women face in an industry dominated by male decision makers are not to be ignored, and the success of this film proved that Jenkins is a [sic] artisan who can move audiences to places of awe, tears, and inspiration.

It was also more surprising to see director Greta Gerwig snubbed for Lady Bird, which she wrote and directed. The coming-of-age film, starring Saoirse Ronan, is the highest rated film of all-time on Rotten Tomatoes sitting currently with a 99 percent positive review score (previously it was sitting at 100 percent, before one critic gave it a rotten score). So, it’s pretty surprising to see Gerwig not nominated for Best Director considering Lady Bird will most likely have the highest reviews for any film this year.
