With a series as massively successful as Harry Potter, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood found a way to extend its lifespan by branching out from the literary source material. Sure enough, that is happening with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a prequel of sorts to Harry Potter that takes place in New York in the 1920s rather than London in the modern era.

With the movie taking place in a different country and different era, it stands to reason, then, that Harry and his schoolmates won’t be making any cameo appearances. However, that doesn’t mean that other characters familiar to Harry Potter fans won’t be showing up.

One such character is Harry’s mentor, Albus Dumbledore. He was old enough in the original Harry Potter series to potentially make the cut for the world of Fantastic Beasts, and now MTV (via Screen Crush) is reporting that just such an appearance is entirely possible. MTV’s Josh Horowitz spoke to Fantastic Beasts stars Alison Sudol (Queenie) and Dan Fogler (Jacob), and managed to squeeze some comments out of both of them regarding the appearance of familiar characters in their new film.

Horowitz first asked Sudol about references made specifically to Dumbledore and Hogwarts in the trailer and asked if the movie might contain other references as well. Sudol offered an unsurprisingly spoiler-free response:

If some of the characters from Harry Potter are alive, does that mean that they will make an actual appearance in the film? When pressed on the issue, Fogler offered a more concrete response than his counterpart, and one that teased a yes answer to that question:

“I wouldn’t say there are a lot, but because it is its own world and it’s also so much earlier, there are people who are alive.”

When asked specifically about Dumbledore, Fogler responded, “I take the Fifth!” For those who haven’t brushed up on their U.S. Constitutional law, the “Fifth” refers to the Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Surely if Fogler spilled the beans on a spoiler that big, he would be learning all sorts of new legal terms after Warner Bros. sued him for breach of contract.

“You do meet…as the stories go along…you…you…I can’t give it away! You will see, you will hear mention of your favorite characters and you may even meet their younger counterparts along the way.”

So will Dumbledore make a cameo in Fantastic Beasts? If so, it will be a much younger Dumbledore than fans are used to. Are there other characters who might make an appearance as well? Give us your best guesses in the comments section.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters November 18, 2016.
