Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them was released only a few months ago to huge success, receiving multiple awards nominations (including two Oscar nominations) and winning a BAFTA. Much of the excitement over the film was, obviously, from Harry Potter fans who were thrilled to return to J.K. Rowling’s magical world, but a lot of it also came from the stunning visual effects. Warner Brothers spared no expense with the creation of this magical version of New York, and from the buildings to the creatures, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them was one of the most beautiful films of 2016.

The movie is still in theaters, and the Blu-ray won’t be available until March, but we don’t have to wait until then to catch new special features. Since the film’s release, we’ve been treated to a school song from Ilvermony, and now a new video highlights some of the amazing special effects that went into the making of the movie.

The clip has been created by Rodeo FX, who delivered 126 shots for the movie, including work on the creatures in Newt’s (Eddie Redmayne) briefcase, their environments, a destroyed room, and the headquarters of the Magical Congress Of The United States of America (MACUSA). At just under four minutes long, the video is without commentary, and shows several of the scenes from the film in different stages of creation (from green screen to computer-generated floor plans).

Rodeo FX is one of several different companies who worked on the visual effects for the film, with a total of 18 listed on the movie’s IMDB page. This is common practice for massive movies like Fantastic Beasts - VFX are divvied up between multiple companies in order to get the work done in an appropriate timeframe. Rodeo FX also provides a series of photo slider images on their website, showing stills from the movie before and after the company added their effects.

The video is absolutely beautiful, and really shows how much of this gorgeous film was created with CGI technology. From Newt’s magical creature habitat to the stunning heights of the MACUSA headquarters, Rodeo FX have outdone themselves in the creation of this magical world. The video pulls together the creation process from blank floor plans to fully rendered color images, and is sure to be an inspirational four minutes for anyone interested in visual effects.

Of course, this video doesn’t reveal any never-before-seen footage from the film, or deleted scenes, so fans looking for something new will be disappointed. It also does what any behind-the-scenes FX clip might - strips away the magic. The halls of MACUSA are suddenly much less impressive when we can see a roomful of costumed actors in front of green screens. Casual fans who prefer to fully immerse themselves in the magic of cinema might be better off staying away from this kind of behind-the-curtain look. That said, we cannot wait to see what Rodeo FX (and the other companies involved) do with the next installment of this latest series: Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2.
