As AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead heads into season 4, Lennie James promises that the next series will expand the story of Morgan Jones.
Fans know that James is the long-awaited crossover character and will depart The Walking Dead to join the prequel show. The network hyped the reveal that one of the characters from the main show would be entering the world of its younger brother, however, many were left shocked to find out that Morgan would be leaving Walking Dead and heading to Texas.
We’ve heard that Fear will be facing a huge time jump to introduce Morgan to the show, but speaking to TV Insider, James revealed that it might not be that simple:
James is obviously remaining tight-lipped on the exact details surrounding his arrival, but we know he will be leaving some time in season 8 of The Walking Dead to head for pastures new. More than just a cut and dry departure, James says that audiences will see Fear carry on what his years on what his years on the main show have already established:
“It’s very, very tricky and it’s the question that everybody’s asking me and it was the question that, obviously, I had when it was all proposed to me. But, at this particular moment in time, I can’t answer that question. I can safely say that, in a weird way, it is both a continuation of that battle that Morgan’s having with himself and with the people around him, and it is still part of his journey to finding some kind of inner peace—but it’s not necessarily told in a straight line. As is typical—or becoming typical—with The Walking Dead, it is not as straightforward as any explanation that I’m allowed to give you would necessarily seem.”
Over the years, fans have seen Morgan become one of the most complex characters to come from the live-action world of Robert Kirkman’s universe. As the first man that Rick Grimes met in the apocalypse, Morgan has suffered the loss of his son, his own season 3 breakdown, then returned as a stick-swinging pacifist. Morgan’s current run on Walking Dead has seen him adopt a more violent streak, so we will have to wait and see which version makes it into Fear.
“It is a continuation. The journey we’re gonna see Morgan on expands his character, but is still part of that battle that he’s having—with himself and the world around him and trying to figure out how best he can continue with the punishment that he’s been given, which is to keep living.”
Alongside newcomer Maggie Grace, the arrival of James promises new to bring new blood to Fear as it enters new territory. The season 3 climax promised to press a reset button on the show with a cliffhanger ending that left the lives of the main cast hanging in the balance. We’re still waiting to see who survived the explosion at the Gonzalez Dam, although we’re expecting that most of the series regulars will come back fighting in season 4.
As we patiently wait for The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead to return from their hiatuses, it sounds like the two worlds will blur the lines between them and set the stage for more crossovers in the future. While many still remain divided on Morgan being the crossover character, the network is certainly promising to deliver big when Morgan packs his stick and makes a voyage of discovery to the Lone Star State.
