The impending release of Final Fantasy VII Remake is giving fans something they have wanted for over twenty years, but there is a developer in Square Enix who wants to see an even older game remade, as he would love a remake of Final Fantasy V. Final Fantasy VII is easily the most popular entry in the series, which has led to a number of spin-offs over the years, but the other Final Fantasy games also have their own established and vocal fanbases.

The favorite Final Fantasy game can often change drastically between regions, as Final Fantasy X is most popular in Japan, while games like Final Fantasy VI are more beloved in North America than in their homeland. There is no denying that Final Fantasy VII is the most iconic and well-known entry in the series, which is why it had a representative added to the Super Smash Bros. series. The announcement of Cloud’s addition to Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U was easily one of the most exciting moments in Nintendo history, even though Final Fantasy VII hadn’t been released on a Nintendo system at that point in time.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is due to be released soon and producer Yoshinori Kitase has discussed another Final Fantasy game that he would like to see remade to the same standard. Kitase told Gamereactor in a recent interview that he would love to see a remake of Final Fantasy V, though he stresses that this is his own opinion and there is currently nothing in the works.

Final Fantasy V was released for the Super Nintendo in 1992. It followed a boy named Bartz Klauser, who gets caught up in a mission to save the four elemental crystals from being destroyed by the villainous Exdeath. Final Fantasy V was notable for its complex character class system, though it’s debatable whether this system would remain in a remake. Final Fantasy VII Remake has a lot of differences from the original game, as Square Enix wants to shake things up when recreating an old title.

“(Laughs) Ok, so first of all, you have to promise you’re not going to write an article saying Square Enix is remaking Final Fantasy something, something… It’s just a purely personal opinion, just so you understand that. With that caveat in place, the first Final Fantasy that I worked on myself was Final Fantasy V, that hasn’t been remade with the more realistic kind of approach yet, so I think it might be quite interesting to do a FF5 remake someday”.

Final Fantasy V isn’t the only old Square Enix game that Kitase would like to see revived, as he recently expressed a desire to see a new game in the Parasite Eve series. Square Enix will be busy with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series for the next few years, so it’s doubtful that players would see a full remake of Final Fantasy V within this time frame, but it’s possible that Kitase’s endorsement could lead to a return of Bartz and his friends on the next generation of systems.
