Firewatch may not have lit the gaming world on fire when it released earlier this year, but it did benefit from overall positive reviews and an experience uncommon in the mainstream gaming world. The indie game by developer Campo Santo is a blend of a lonely walk through the great outdoors and an intensely concerted effort to explore human nature at its most raw. Firewatch has no combat, no puzzles (other than its unfolding mystery), and almost no human interaction outside the woman on the other side of your walkie-talkie.

Though critical response to its overall plot resolution was middling, voice actors Rich Sommer (Mad Men) and Cissy Jones (Life is Strange) have been praised for breathing personality into the story’s protagonist, Henry, and the woman on the other side of his walkie-talkie, Delilah.

Courtesy of THR comes news that Campo Santo has partnered with indie film company Good Universe (who co-produced Neighbors and Don’t Breathe) to develop content together for both films and video games. The first of these projects is set to be a film adaptation of Firewatch. Campo Santo founder Sean Vanaman discussed his excitement for the collaboration:

“When we met Good Universe we were floored by how they recognize, cultivate and produce incredible stories. It’s rare you meet another group that shares so many of your values and makes the process of creating things even more exciting. We can’t wait to see what we make together.”

Good Universe’s co-founder Joe Drake also shared the enthusiasm. “Finding extraordinary content is incredibly exciting,” he noted, “and with the Campo Santo team, we felt an immediate simpatico with their utterly beguiling storytelling and amazing creative instincts.”

Considering the nature of Firewatch, it will certainly be a novelty in video game-to-film adaptations. Since the game was already entirely story-centric, it’s possible that one of the hurdles so many prior efforts have stumbled over won’t be an issue. Then again, since the ambiance, acting, and novelty among its class were the aspects of Firewatch most praised over its actual story, it could be that this will be yet another casualty of the terrible game-to-film curse. At least an enormous budget won’t be one of the major roadblocks to production.
