Bardock and Broly are coming to Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball FighterZ as the first two characters to be released as DLC. The two will join a roster of 24 heroes and villains from Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. The addition of Broly shows that Bandai Namco is also willing to include characters introduced in the movies.

Released in January, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a fighting game with 2.5D graphics that utilizes the tag-team mechanics of the early installments of the popular Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. Players assemble teams of three with a roster that includes Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo and several more from the various sagas of Dragon Ball Z. Characters from Dragon Ball Super, such as Hit, Goku Black, Beerus, Super Saiyan, Blue Vegeta, and Goku, also make appearances. Depending on the matchups, players can recreate iconic scenes from the series with character-specific dialogue.

In the latest issue of the Japanese magazine V-Jump, it was revealed that Bardock and Broly will be the first pair of characters to join the roster of Dragon Ball FighterZ as part of the FighterZ Pass, a DLC pack of eight additional characters. Until now, official details of the new characters have been kept under wraps.

Dragon Ball fans know that both characters are key figures in the history of the Saiyans. Bardock, Goku’s father, made a courageous stand against the forces of Frieza but was tragically killed. The character was largely used only in flashbacks in Dragon Ball Z but was featured as the protagonist in the movie, Bardock: Father of Goku.

In the game, Bardock’s Super Special Attack, “Revenger Assault”, involves the character charging his opponent and transforming into a Super Saiyan. The inclusion of this ability is noteworthy, considering that it never happened in-canon. Bardock went Super Saiyan in what-if scenarios only. The transformation occurred in video games such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and the movie, Dragon Ball: Episodes of Bardock.

Broly is a fan-favorite villain whose popularity has made him the only character to serve as the main villain in three films: Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly: Second Coming, and Bio-Broly. The Legendary Super Saiyan was a bloodthirsty warrior with a deep hatred for Goku. His Super Special Attack in FighterZ is “Gigantic Meteor”, an energy attack so powerful that it can devastate planets.

For fans, the addition of Bardock and Broly means that other characters from the movies, like Janemba, Cooler, and Tapion, have a chance of becoming playable in Dragon Ball FighterZ.
