As part of the many unveilings and releases of San Diego Comic-Con 2018, Disney fans were given a surprise first look at the upcoming live-action Kim Possible. While the popular animated series finale aired back in 2007, it was announced this past February that the Disney Channel original show was being developed into its first live-action adaptation.

The animated series, which ran from 2002-2007, followed the life of titular character Kim Possible – a seemingly normal high school girl who is actually a secret agent that fights crime while attempting to juggle the social challenges of being a teenager. The fan-favorite action heroine led this secret life with the help of her best friend Ron Stoppable, his pet mole-rat Rufus, and their tech-smart friend Wade Load. While the team tackled numerous villains during the series, Kim’s toughest nemeses were Dr. Drakken and Shego. The plot for the upcoming 2019 release is still unknown.

Disney Channel unveiled the first look at Sadie Stanley in costume as Kim Possible during their panel for Big Hero 6: The Series at Comic-Con. The first look was a surprise to many attendees, but the timing makes sense considering that Big Hero 6 executive producers Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley are the original creators of Kim Possible. In addition to McCorkle and Schooley returning to help write the script with Josh Cagan, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein are slated to direct.

Disney has previously produced two feature-length animated movies based on the series - Kim Possible: A Stitch in Time and Kim Possible: So the Drama - but this will be the first-live action adaptation. Considering that the original voice actors of Kim, Ron, and Wade (played by Christy Carlson Romano, Will Friedle, and Tahj Mowry, respectively) are in their 30’s and 40’s, Disney selected a varied cast of unknowns and proven talent. This will be Stanley’s first major role, but The Goldbergs’ Sean Giambrone will play Ron Stoppable, Black-ish’s Issac Ryan Brown will take up the mantle of Wade Load, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and How I Met Your Mother actress Alyson Hannigan will play Kim’s mother, and Todd Stashwick and Taylor Ortega round out the core cast as Dr. Drakken and Shego, respectively.

There’s little doubt that fans who grew up with Kim Possible would recognize the heroine from nothing more than her signature phone beep, but it’ll be interesting to see if Disney has as much success with a younger audience that may be introduced to her for the first time. The studio is starting to establish a proven process for turning animated features into live-action smash hits, so it’s probably a safe bet that they will get this one right as well.
