David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners behind HBO’s Game of Thrones, have cameos in Westworld season 3. Based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, Westworld first debuted in 2016 and became a massive hit for the streaming platform. Its third season is set to premiere on HBO this Sunday, March 15, almost two years after season 2 came to an end. The futuristic series, executive produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, centers on a western-themed park where guests can live out their wildest fantasies. Unfortunately, these fantasies are at the expense of android hosts who make up the theme park’s population. Season 1 and 2 centered on these hosts as they became more sentient and aware of the actions and individuals around them. Now, season 3 finds some of these hosts out and about in the real world.
Season 2 of the hit series received more mixed reviews than its wildly successful first season, mainly due to its ever-expanding world and convoluted narrative. Currently, reviews for season 3 have mirrored some of the same criticisms, with the season currently sitting at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the bold and creative storytelling is simultaneously the series’ strong suit, and hopefully, season 3 will reel audiences back in that may have fallen off the wagon in season 2. As of right now, most story details are being kept under lock and key, but HBO did reveal titles and teasers for the first four episodes. It’s also been revealed that some other big HBO creators will have small cameos in season 3.
According to The Wrap, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will “appear in the second episode of season 3” playing “technicians at Delos, the company that created Westworld and the other host-filled Delos Destinations theme parks.” Not much else is known about their parts in season 3’s narrative, but viewers won’t have to wait too long to see their appearance.
Despite creating the wildly popular adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s novels, Benioff and Weiss have had quite a rough couple of months following the divisive finale of their hit fantasy series. Not only did the duo recently exit their planned Star Wars trilogy, but their controversial HBO follow-up project, Confederate, was also canceled. However, in the midst of all of these cancellations along with the heated discourse surrounding Game of Thrones, the duo ended up signing a monumental deal with Netflix. The deal will see them writing, directing, and producing movies and television shows under Netflix’s banner, and their first series is already in the works.
Considering both Game of Thrones and Westworld played a massive role in HBO’s success over the years, it makes sense why the duo would be making a brief appearance. Their cameos as Delos technicians will likely be a very small part of the series’ massive overall narrative, which is said to be taking the show in a radical new direction this season. With season 3 quickly coming up on the horizon, it’ll be interesting to see where Westworld’s story goes from its season 2 cliffhanger. Thankfully, fans don’t have to wait much longer to see.
