Goodbye Christopher Robin, the A.A. Milne biopic, has released its first poster; a sweetly charming look at a tale of a father and son. This movie, it should be stressed, is not the Disney live-action Christopher Robin movie in the works. Instead, Goodbye Christopher Robin is based on the real life story of Winnie-the-Pooh creator, Milne, and his relationship with his son, Christopher Robin, whose love for his toys inspired Milne’s stories.
Directed by Simon Curtis, with a screenplay from Frank Cottrell Boyce and Simon Vaughn, Goodbye Christoper Robin stars Domhnall Gleeson as Milne, opposite Margot Robbie as his wife, Daphne. Will Tilston plays the young Christopher Robin, and the cast is rounded out with Kelly Macdonald, Stephen Campbell Moore, Alex Lawther, Richard McCabe, Nico Mirallegro, Geraldine Somerville and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The one-sheet can be viewed below.
The poster immediately conjures a sense of nostalgia; a parent and small child walking along together, only in this case, the child, Christopher Robin, carries Winnie-the-Pooh in one hand. The familiar London scenery is one one side, while the other holds a hint of Hundred Acre Wood, the fictional home of Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore and more.
Goodbye Christopher Robin follows the Milne family and their nanny, Olive (Macdonald), as the success of Milne’s stories takes over their lives. The adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh brought comfort and escape to many after the events of the First World War, but the cost of Milne’s success had an impact on his family life. Milne became frustrated that the success of Winnie-the-Pooh overshadowed all his previous work, and anything he did after, too.
Thus far, not much is known about the form the movie will take, though the poster hints at it being an emotive tale. The project has been overshadowed somewhat by talk of Disney’s Christopher Robin movie, but Fox Searchlight will be firing up the publicity engine now, given that Goodbye Christopher Robin is set to arrive this Fall. It seems reasonable to expect a trailer sooner rather than later, which will give a better look at Gleeson, Robbie and others in action. Hopefully, the movie will follow other similar films that have detailed the creation of an iconic piece of work, such as Finding Neverland (Peter Pan), and Saving Mr. Banks (Mary Poppins). It will certainly be fascinating to take a closer look at what inspired Milne to write such a classic piece of literature that has endured the test of time.
