James Gunn confirms that a Wal Rus Easter Egg was in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

He may have not officially debuted on screen but in the comics, Wal Rus originated from Halfworld, a planet where a slew of highly intelligent animals provided the people inhabiting the world with entertainment. It is the same planet where Rocket came from and in fact, the two have been partners-in-crime for a while, at least in print. Wal has prosthetic tusks which help him to function like human beings and they are also capable of precise energy blasts. Now, as it turns out, the creature may even have a future in the MCU, thanks to newfound Easter Egg in the sequel.

Gunn confirmed that a Wal Rus Easter Egg was indeed in Guardians of the Galaxy  Vol. 2 on Twitter after a fan named Cameron King asked him about what he found upon rewatching the film. Check out the exchange between the two below:

The confirmation of the Easter Egg comes on the heels of the reveal of another one pertaining to Ego and Mantis. As it turns out, Peter’s Celestial father was also in a relationship with a woman from the same species as Mantis. This has resulted in numerous theories that Star-Lord and the team’s resident empath could be siblings. However, while Gunn confirmed the hidden detail, the director discouraged people to assume anything more about it. It’s interesting, however, that he didn’t explicitly deny the hypothesis about the two Guardians being related. Perhaps it’s something that could be explored further down the line if that’s what Marvel is planning to do.

It’s important to note, however, that it’s unclear if this is the big Easter Egg that Gunn has been talking about for quite some time now as  he didn’t say anything more than affirm the fan theory. The filmmaker previously revealed that the Ego/Mantis Easter Egg wasn’t the fun nod that he was pertaining to earlier this year, meaning that a bigger reference remains undiscovered in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But with the Wal Rus nod now out in the open, not to mention how important he is with regard to Rocket’s origins, it’s curious if there are any other hidden callbacks in the sequel, or this is the final one that everyone was hell-bent in looking for.

With the confirmation that Wal Rus exists in the MCU, it’s curious if there’s a chance that fans will see his live-action debut anytime soon. The narrative for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,  which is expected to roll out in 2020, is still unclear, but the Ravagers’ continued prominence in the series (the Wal Rus portrait is from the Iron Lotus on Contraxia where Yondu is at the start of the film), means it could be possible. If not, perhaps it’s a set-up for the Marvel sub-franchise to finally tackle Rocket’s origins story - a burning mystery that fans surely want to know more of.
