Keeping track of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies can be a daunting task, on par with trying to buy all the comic books that tie into a large crossover event. Luckily, every now and then Marvel collects those movies into super-sized mega-collections that give casual fans a chance to play catch-up while providing more hardcore fans with a bunch of extra bonus features.
The first such collection, the 10-disc Phase One Blu-ray boxed set, came out in 2012 and collected all the MCU movies from the first Iron Man through the first Avengers. The 13-disc Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two collection continues where the first collection left off, rounding up all the movies from Iron Man 3 through Ant-Man, and includes a similar overabundance of extras.
One such extra feature is a deleted scene from Guardians of the Galaxy in which a drunk Drax explains the origins of his tattoos to some very rough drafts of Groot and Rocket Raccoon. The scene leads to a confrontation between Drax and Rocket in which they compete over who has suffered the most family tragedy. Rocket, whose mother had “an IQ of three and ate her young when they showed minor flu symptoms,” claims the upper hand.
It’s easy to see why the scene did not make the final cut of the movie. It would not have contributed to the forward momentum of the narrative in a film that already clocked in at over two hours long. For completists, though, it’s an entertaining glimpse at additional character development between some of the Guardians. When put together with the extra features from the other Blu-rays in the collection and exclusives such as From Here To Infinity: Phases 2 & 3 Of The M.C.U. and Phase 2 Tag Scenes: A Making-Of, it makes for an attractive purchase for hardcore MCU fans despite the not-inexpensive price tag of $179.
