Following the departure of acclaimed Japanese video game designer, screenwriter, director, and producer Hideo Kojima from his former partnership with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain publisher Konami, there’s been plenty of speculation and news surrounding his upcoming comeback project, Death Stranding. The first teaser trailer for the new game offered potential players an enigmatic glimpse of lead actor Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) set against a beach awash with various dead fish and other marine animals - in addition to a disappearing infant child held in Reed’s clutches, however briefly.

Fans of the Metal Gear Solid series are no strangers to Kojima’s seemingly incoherent flair for bizarre and absurd imagery and cinematic spectacles, and by all accounts Death Stranding won’t be any more accessible for the layman to pick up and play. That’s unlikely to stop the new game from becoming one of the most hotly anticipated new titles, as can be seen by the latest footage offered in the second official trailer.

As a part of a presentation given at the 2016 Game Awards, Kojima revealed a new trailer for Death Stranding to significant fanfare and applause. In the footage featured above, potential players can take another thrilling look at the marine riddled beaches from the first trailer, and track the path tread by the trailer’s costars: filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Crimson Peak) and actor Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange). Featuring several enigmatic shots of baby eyes opening in bemused wonder, plus another oily field populated by deranged soldiers, Kojima isn’t giving too much away about Death Stranding just yet - even if some might glean a few clues based on the images that have been repeated between the two trailers released thus far. The inclusion of del Toro  - who worked with Kojima and Reedus previously on the Silent Hill demo P.T. - and Mikkelsen should result in another winning production for Kojima, and the first big hit for the newly-formed video game studio Kojima Productions.

Only time will tell how things will ultimately shape up as production on Death Stranding continues, but with any luck the new game will see the creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise taking his skills and aesthetic influence to new levels previously untapped. Kojima is a name to look out for in the world of gaming, which makes his latest project more than worthy of significant attention and anticipatory speculation.
