Halloween 2018 co-writer Danny McBride reveals he and David Gordon Green almost pitched two sequels to be shot back-to-back – but decided better of it. The new Halloween will wipe the slate clean for the franchise, ignoring the events of every other movie bar the 1978 original. The 2018 film will act as a direct sequel, and will bring back Jamie Lee Curtis as iconic final girl Laurie Strode. Series creator John Carpenter will also return to compose the score, while original Michael Myers performer Nick Castle will reprise the role for a couple of scenes.

This won’t be the first time the Halloween series has hit the reset button. The franchise has around four separate timelines already, including Rob Zombie’s remakes. The series has become so tangled it would be near impossible to tie it all together at this point; in fact, Curtis’ Laurie Strode has already died twice across the differing timelines. The new movie will also do away with the reveal that Michael and Laurie are siblings, which was the shock twist of 1981’s Halloween II.

Halloween 2018 co-writer Danny McBride is a big fan of the series, and in a new interview with EW, he reveals he and director David Gordon Green almost pitched two movies that would be shot at the same time. In the end, they decided to focus on one movie and see what the reception was before leaping into a possible sequel.

McBride’s admission is interesting since the new Halloween has previously been framed as a one-off project from all involved. Jamie Lee Curtis has labeled the new film as ‘Halloween Retold,’ stating it’s like the original but told from the perspective of Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson, played by Andi Matichak. If that’s the case, it doesn’t feel like a big leap to speculate Allyson could potentially head up the series if a direct sequel to Halloween 2018 happens.

We were going to shoot two of them back-to-back. Then we were like, Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This could come out, and everyone could hate us, and we’d never work again. So, let’s not have to sit around for a year while we wait for another movie to come out that we know people aren’t going to like. So, we were like, let’s learn from this, and see what works, and what doesn’t. But we definitely have an idea of where we would go [with] this branch of the story and hopefully, we get a chance to do it.

It sounds like McBride has a solid idea of where the story could go beyond the current movie, but it’s way too early to speculate what another movie could be about. That said, Jamie Lee Curtis has said Halloween 2018 will be her last outing as Laurie, so it appears that no matter what happens next, this will be the character’s final showdown with Michael.
