Director Ron Howard has now confirmed that the Han Solo movie will visit Han’s home planet of Corellia. The film will explore the smuggler’s earlier years, prior to his life-changing encounter with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker in A New Hope. Lucasfilm is still hard at work on the currently-untitled young Han Solo project (which is set to arrive in May 2018), even as fans prepare for the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi this December.

After a big shake-up with the departure of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Howard took over directing duties for the remaining weeks of scheduled principal photography as well as reshoots. Although plot details remain a secret, thanks to Howard regularly sharing behind-the-scenes set photos through his Twitter account, we have learned a few details about the film - with the confirmation about Han’s homeworld being the newest among them.

Among the many rumors surrounding the film was that of planets Corellia and Kessel (of the famous Kessel Run) making their cinematic debut, which makes perfect sense given the importance of both planets in Han Solo’s life. In a new set photo shared by Howard on Twitter (see below), the director confirms the introduction of Corellia (and its chilly nights).

Corellia, located in the galaxy’s Core Worlds, was known for its ace pilots and large starships, with vessels such as the Millennium Falcon and Imperial starships being built there. At one point in its history, an organization known as the Corellian Resistance operated on the planet, fighting against the Empire. It’s also the homeworld of Rebel pilot Wedge Antilles and bounty hunter Dengar. Corellia is often described as un urbanized and heavily industrialized planet – hence their excellence at shipbuilding. Although Howard’s pic doesn’t show much, the background gives an industrial vibe, which coincides with the description of Han’s homeplanet.

Han Solo, starring Alden Ehrenreich as the galaxy’s favorite cynical smuggler, will delve into his formative years, covering his life from ages 18-24, and exploring key events such as his relationship with his mentor, Beckett (Woody Harrelson), his life-long friendship with Chewbacca, and winning the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover).

The Star Wars films traditionally include at least one unexplored planet to further expand the franchise’s universe and mythology. The addition of Corellia to the young Han Solo film will not only give fans a deeper look at Han Solo’s backstory but also at the origin of the beloved spaceship the Millennium Falcon – and, hopefully, a look at other Corellian characters that have been briefly featured in other Star Wars movies.
