The untitled Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film is currently coming together. This will be the second Star War spin-off, following Rogue One, which is set to explore the origins of the famed smuggler. While rumors persist about possible casting choices for a young Lando Calrissian and possible love interests to join Alden Ehrenreich on this journey, it will also be interesting to learn what other filmmakers will be working with directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord.
Given how the Star Wars universe has so many directions it can go with these anthology films, it can be just as exciting to learn news about the composer for Rogue One, as it strays away from the established patterns found in the episodic entries. Adding to this, there is now confirmation concerning who will be handling cinematography duties for Han Solo.
Miller has confirmed via Twitter that Bradford Young, an award-winning cinematographer who has been building up an impressive resume, is set to shoot the upcoming Han Solo film. Young will be coming off of another upcoming science fiction film, Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, and entering into a much bigger universe, which certainly establishes him as one fit for the big leagues.
While there are not many credits to his name, Young has previously established himself with smaller efforts such as Pariah and Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. Young would gain further recognition for his work on the acclaimed dramas Selma, Pawn Sacrifice and A Most Violent Year. He has won multiple cinematography awards from the Sundance Film Festival and has been deemed a filmmaker to keep an eye on.
With all the built in hype that surrounds these upcoming Star Wars films, it is this kind of news that is the most interesting. Obviously it is fun to hear about various casting rumors and potential to explore certain previously established characters, planets, etc. However, the world of Star Wars is so vast and full of potential when it comes to determining how to visualize it in different cinematic ways. Star Wars Rebels and other animated properties have take the chance to move in slightly new directions, but moving away from the Skywalker family and John Williams opens up a whole new angle for directors and the filmmakers they work with to really dig into.
Hopefully Lord and Miller’s more kinetic style does not clash adversely with Young, who has mostly been attached to heavy dramas so far. It seems unlikely to be a factor when thinking of film as a collaborative process, but putting together a new kind of space opera centered on Han Solo is unexplored territory. The results will no doubt be exciting regardless.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in U.S. theaters on December 16, 2016, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII on December 15, 2017, the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25, 2018, Star Wars: Episode IX in 2019, and the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
