A new deleted scene from Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War reveals that Jon Favreau’s character Happy Hogan was indeed supposed to be in the film. Many characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe appeared in the third Avengers installment, but Happy wasn’t one of them.

Favreau had a helping hand in crafting the beginning of Marvel’s long-running film series. Iron Man was the first entry in the cinematic universe, which Favreau directed and he also appeared in as the character Happy Hogan. Hogan first appeared in the comic Tales of Suspense #45 in 1963, and in the MCU, he is currently Stark Industries’ Head of Security. Favreau was in charge of directing Iron Man and its sequel Iron Man 2. Favreau also appeared as Happy Hogan in all three Iron Man films - as well as Spider-Man: Homecoming - but was absent from Infinity War.

The upcoming Avengers: Infinity War Blu-ray and currently available digital release contains a deleted scene of Favreau’s Happy Hogan. Favreau had previously teased his cameo in Infinity War, but it obviously didn’t make the final cut of the film. Hogan was supposed to appear during the scene where Tony and Pepper are walking through Central Park discussing marriage and children. Happy originally sped in on a golf cart, telling them to just elope because the “media circus” was driving him mad.

Infinity War would have marked Favreau’s fourth MCU appearance as Happy Hogan. Even though it didn’t happen for the Avengers’ third adventure, fans of the character will be glad to know that Happy has been confirmed for Avengers 4. Outside of the MCU, Favreau has remained busy with Disney by directing their live-action The Jungle Book remake, as well as directing the upcoming live-action The Lion King. Adapting The Lion King will no doubt be a tough task given the original film’s popularity, but the project has already successfully cast most of its main characters.

Favreau’s appearance would have been a humorous inclusion in an otherwise mostly serious film, but it didn’t make the final cut. Avengers: Infinity War had a two and a half hour runtime, so there probably just wasn’t enough time to include Happy Hogan. Early reports indicated that Infinity War would include 40 superheroes, so the filmmakers seemingly had their hands full dealing with the more crucial characters. Even though he didn’t show up in Infinity War, it’s reassuring that the Blu-ray will have his deleted scene, and that he didn’t perish after Thanos’ finger snap.
