David Gordon Green’s Halloween and Jeremy Saulnier’s horror-thriller Hold the Dark will both host their U.S. premieres at Fantastic Fest 2018 next month. The former is currently scheduled to begin its domestic theatrical release in October (just under two weeks before the titular holiday), whereas the latter will become available for streaming through Netflix at the end of September. While fast-approaching events like the Toronto and Venice International Film Festivals typically focus on would-be awards season contenders and prestigious director-driven films with their lineups, the annual Fantastic Fest usually highlights genre fare instead (specifically, of the horror and thriller variety)....

Apple SVP Services Eddy Cue, and his wife Paula, have donated $10 million to Duke University to advance the work of the science and technology department. Cue’s donation will help the university recruit and educate the next generation of tech workers, in growing subject areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and autonomous systems. $8 million of the $10 million gifted will set up the Cue Faculty Fellows scheme. This will involve adding four new faculty members with diverse hiring....

At the Warners Bros. panel at San Diego Comic Con 2017, eight films were officially announced for the DC Extended Universe. Over the next few years, fans will get to see Suicide Squad 2, The Batman, Shazam, Justice League Dark, Flashpoint, Wonder Woman 2, Green Lantern Corps, and Batgirl. Glenn Close offers a defense of Scarlett Johansson’s controversial casting in Rub & Tug. Godzilla: King of the Monsters introduces new monsters to Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse. Among them is Mothra, a giant moth-like kaiju often accompanied by two small fairies - roles that Millie Bobby Brown and Vera Farmiga’s characters may take the place of in this Godzilla sequel. Mothra is unique among the kaiju typically featured in the Godzilla franchise. Unlike Rodan or King Ghidorah, Mothra first debuted in the serialized novel, The Luminous Fairies and Mothra by Takehiko Fukunaga, Shinichiro Nakamura, and Yoshie Hotta....

Marvel Studios will reportedly wait a while to get Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 off the ground, as a new report states filming won’t begin until 2021. The firing of James Gunn as director of Guardians 3 has sent the project into a state of uncertainty. He won’t be returning to direct as many had hoped, but his script is said to be still used.
